Safety Regulations
19th US Infantry

In any instance that site regulations are more stringent than those listed herein, the regulations of the site will supersede those listed below.

Cartridges

Only prepared cartridges for Firearms and /or artillery cartridges and priming tubes shall be brought to the demonstration or tactical
area.

Bulk or powder horns with bulk powder are not permitted.

Powder horns permitted without black powder only, while priming horns may carry no more than one ounce fffg or ffffg powder.

Cartridges shall be prepared according to these standards.

Blank cartridges will be of paper, rolled in an 18th or 19th century manner, folded, glued, or tied without staples or tape. The paper
used in making the cartridges must be heavy enough to resist accidental ignition by stray spark(s) or damage before use. Rifle blank
rounds will be made in the same manner as musket rounds. It is not acceptable to use plastic tubes or any other containers as blank
cartridges for firearms.

All artillery blank cartridges will be of aluminum foil, rolled and formed with a distinct bottom and top to the cartridges.

All unexpended cartridges and dropped rounds will be policed from the demonstration area and returned to safe storage containers.

Cartridges will be stored in an appropriate magazine, preferably a fireproof container or a wooden box of dovetailed construction.

All unused cartridges will be returned to the fireproof storage containers after demonstrations or tacticals.
Firearms

Only carefully made and proofed replica firearms will be used.

Prior to the first firing of the day a weapon safety inspection will be made by the unit commander and, where applicable, site
personnel.

No firearm shall be pointed towards another person, visitor or reenactor. Firearms will not be discharged towards, or over people
except as specified in tactical demonstrations/simulated battles.

All opposed side demonstrations require all weapons to be elevated above the enemy force when closed within 100 feet

All units must use appropriate misfire drill for cleaning suspect rounds.

Flintlocks will only be discharged in accordance with the regulations of the host site.

Edged Weapons

All knives, axes, pole arms. Swords, and bayonets used for passive demonstrations (including all tactical demonstrations) shall have
dull edges.

Knives, axes, and other cutting tools for active demonstrations such as chopping wood or food service shall be used for that purpose.

All edged weapons or tools except pole arms shall have sturdy sheaths or scabbards in place when not in use.

All edged weapons and tools, when not in use, should be placed in a safe locale or kept under supervision and out of reach of visitors.

Artillery

Only replica muzzle-loading artillery pieces shall be used for demonstrations. These replicas shall be constructed of cast "iron" or
bronze.

Vents are to be clean and of a proper size for the weapon, and all implements of proper fit.

All artillery crews will double worm and double sponge for all blank firings.

Priming tubes or powder from paper cartridges are the only means that will be used for ignition. A linstock or port fire will be used
for firing.

Artillery, when intended to be fired, shall be placed with twelve yards between the piece and the visitors. The area forward of the
muzzle will also be kept clear of people for the arc of 60 degrees

Artillery that has misfired will remain in position until the situation is resolved.

Any misfire in a tactical demonstration, ceremony, or battle will end that weapon's use in that program. No action to place the
weapon back in service, for that demonstration is allowed. If a misfire occurs, all persons must stay clear of the muzzle to 100'
distance. If the artillery piece, during a tactical demonstration misfires, no attempt to reprime should be made. The piece should be
flooded after 5 min. During the securing of the piece, any participant crossing the muzzle within 100' should be waved off or warned
by the gun commander. Also, tactical commanders, demonstration narrators, or site representatives should be notified immediately so
that other participants may be made aware of the situation.

Any persons crossing the muzzle of the gun within 100' while the piece is loaded must be waved off or warned by the gun
commander.

No gun is to be moved in a loaded condition in any demonstration or simulated battle. Artillery will not fire within 100 feet of the
opposing forces or while supporting infantry is forward of the gun muzzle, one hundred fee and a 60 degree arc from the weapon.

Artillery commanders will request approval of friendly infantry commander before firing with supporting infantry forward of battery
position.

Tactical Demonstrations and Simulated Battles

All firing will cease at one hundred feet and within a sixty degree arc; no closing with edged weapons will be allowed.

No objects may be thrown during opposed side demonstrations.

No weapon is to be discharged toward or over visitors. Units ending a demonstration must be clear and safety check all firearms
before leaving the demonstration area. All units must police their area for cartridges and other objects.

Camp Safety

All fire pits will be confined to an area behind the camp. Company streets and tent rows will be kept free of fire pits, tent ropes,
furniture and other obstacles.

Edged weapons and tools must be kept out of reach of visitors.

No firearms or edged weapons will be left unattended in the camp area.

Fire buckets, on the order of one per camp fire will he kept full and on hand at all times.

No open flames are permitted within tents. All candles must be kept in a lantern while lit when inside canvas structures or while
inside historical structures.

Persons demonstrating activities centered around the camp fire must either wear an outer wool petticoat or wet the hem of the
petticoat. All skirts should be kept at mid ankle height when working in the vicinity of a fire.

All persons in the camp area must be properly attired and, when moving about, wear shoes at all times.

Each unit will keep a basic first aid kit on hand in the camp area. Special attention should be paid to any particular need of group
members in reference to first aid or allergies.

Any pertinent emergency medical information needed should be conveyed to the unit commander or his subordinate.
